Dear Friends,
We are writing to ask for your help.
Last Sunday, Linda Goss and her family suffered a
devastating house fire. Thankfully, the whole family
is fine, but they lost everything.
A first fundraiser is this Sunday, November 16, at
Point of Destination Cafe, at the Upsal SEPTA Station,
6460 Greene Street at 2 PM. (215.849.7741)
Contributions in any amount can be made to "Aisha
Goss." If you are not able to attend the fundraiser,
you can mail checks to the Philadelphia Folklore
Project, at the address below. Most likely we'll be
planning another event in the coming weeks. Please do
what you can to help this beloved woman of words and
her family. Linda Goss is dedicated to "waking up the
people," which she has done powerfully for decades:
this is time for us to do what we can on behalf of her
and her family.
Linda is the "Official Storyteller" of Philadelphia. A
pioneer of the contemporary storytelling movement, she
was co-founder of "In the tradition. . ." the National
Black Storytelling Festival and Conference, and The
National Association of Black Storytellers, a founding
member of Keepers of the Culture (a Philadelphia-area
affiliate of NABS), and of Patchwork: a Storytelling
Guild, the author of numerous books, and a contributor
to numerous collections on African American
storytelling. She has two Folkways recordings to her
credit. She performs widely. She is the recipient of
the 2003 Oracle Lifetime Achievement Award in
Storytelling from the National Storytelling Network,
and has received a grant as a master artist to work
with an apprentice, through the PA Council on the
Arts. She holds an undergraduate degree from Howard
University, Washington, D.C. and a Masters degree from
Antioch University. She is currently
Artist-In-Residence at the Rosenbach Museum, and a
teaching artist at Folk Arts - Cultural Treasures
Charter School and a Philadelphia Folklore Project
board member.
Many thanks for what you can do to help.
Sincerely,
Debora
