The bride, 27, is an associate in the tax department at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, the Manhattan law firm. She graduated from Columbia and received a law degree, cum laude, from Duke. She is a daughter of Sandra A. Sooklal-Balfour of Coconut Creek, Fla., and the late Leslie A. Balfour.

The couple met on a plane from Florida to New York in January 2004, when Ms. Balfour, whose row was full, moved next to an otherwise empty one occupied by Mr. Marcus. By the following January they had embarked on romance.
